Kant in Asia: The Unity of Human Personhood

First Call for Papers

You are cordially invited to submit a 100-150 word abstract for a paper suitable for presentation at the captioned international conference. The main objective of this conference will be to encourage in depth interaction between Asian and Western interpreters of Kant. English will be the main language, but papers may also be submitted in Chinese or German. To encourage mutual interaction, translations will be provided wherever possible.

Papers on any area of Kant’s philosophy will be considered, but priority will be given to those that relate to the main theme (Kant’s conception of human personhood) and/or to any aspect of the relation between Kant and Chinese (or other Asian) philosophical systems. Topics directly relevant to the main theme include (but are not be limited to): the nature/limits of human knowledge/reason; human autonomy; principles of moral obligation; the individual and the community; the nature of reality and how we indwell it; immanence and transcendence; the relation between God and human personhood; authentic vs. inauthentic religion; political personhood; and moral education.

Responses to this initial call for papers will assist the organizers in estimating the likely number of participants, so that this information can be provided to prospective funding institutions. The details below are tentative and subject to revision. Upon confirmation of funding, those who have submitted abstracts will be notified of acceptance or asked to submit a revised abstract. Once all the details of the conference have been finalized (keynote speakers, fees, likely number of sessions, cultural activities, etc.), a Second Call for Papers will be circulated.

Tentative conference dates:   21-23 May 2009

Location:                        one or more universities in Hong Kong

Keynote Speakers:          To be announced pending finalization of funding

Organizations initially endorsing this conference include the North American Kant Society, Philopsychy Press, and the Journal of Chinese Philosophy. The deadline for submitting an abstract and/or the Confirmation of Initial Interest form, below, is 15 March 2008.
